Root is a town in Montgomery County, New York, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Erastus Root, a legislator. The Town of Root is in the south-central part of the county and is southwest of Amsterdam. The Erie Canal passes the north part of Root. == History == Root was in Corry's patent. The first British settler located near Currytown before the American Revolution but this was very much the frontier. During the Revolution, the small colonial community was raided and burned by Iroquois allies of the British. Root was once part of the original "Town of Mohawk."
